Reviews: Girard Cabernet Sauvignon

2005 Estate Cabernet

93 Points - Top 11 List, California Cabs for the Vintage
Girard 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Bottled (Napa Valley); $75. Tight, intense, focused and structured, with vibrant black cherry, currant, wild berry, spice and light cedary oak. Though firm and concentrated, this reveals an elegant mouthfeel, showing just a trace of heat on the finish. Firmly tannic. Best from 2010 through 2017. 475 cases made - James Laube.

2002 Estate Cabernet

90 Points - Cellar Selection
Girard 2002 Estate Cabernet (Napa Valley); $60. You can tell this is a young wine by the aroma, which is dominated by oak and a tease of cherry. The fruit is shut down. But in the mouth, there is a rich core of blackberries and cherries, and the tannin-acid balance is near perfect. This fine Cabernet is in need of cellaring. Hold until 2010 and try again.

Well-structured, with a firm band of ripe plum and black cherry fruit shaded by light cedar, herb and lead pencil shavings. It gains momentum and shows excellent depth on the finish, along with some chewy tannins. Drink now through 2009. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 350 cases made.
