About This Wine
The Mixed Blacks vineyard, planted in Calistoga over 100 years ago, is an homage to California’s winegrowing heritage. When immigrants first settled here, they brought with them vine cuttings from their villages and planted what would later become known as field blends. These unique vineyards produced wines that were shared among family, traded with neighbors and offer a nod to the farmers who settled in wine country.

Tasting Notes
Our 2016 vintage exudes aromas of jammy blackberry, candied liqueur and baking spice on the nose. On the palate red licorice and dark fruit intertwine with hints of blood orange and pomegranate, followed by rich and lasting finish notes of cassis, dark chocolate and dusty tannins. Swirl in the glass or decant to allow layers of elegant complexity to unfold on the palate.

Vineyard Notes
This Mixed Blacks fruit is sourced from the Godward Vineyard in Calistoga from century old head-pruned vines. Inter-planted varietals from the turn of the century make this a nod to California’s wine growing heritage and the field blends it first produced. The varietals believed to be grown in this vineyard are Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre.

With concerns of uneven ripening in older field blends we do our best to stay on top of the maturity of these vineyards during harvest to attempt to find the perfect balance of fruit ripeness and balanced acidity. Once in the cellar we attempt to extract the most character during fermentation.
